Nepal's Electoral Scene Sees Significant Alliance Forged By Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant development ahead of the upcoming national polls, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.

"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.

The September revolt was sparked by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from years of slow growth and persistent allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Details of the Fresh Political Agreement

According to the formal pact, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the nation's established political class. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved.

Wider Political Discussions Underway

In a related event, the current interim prime minister recently held meetings with several leading political leaders. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the protests.

Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that conducting a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and open environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
