New research indicates that individuals who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop traditional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a major medical journal shows that while overweight individuals can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Users using these drugs must be informed of the danger of rapid weight regain when the therapy is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery implies a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about one and a half years.
Weighing Treatments
The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
The team note that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically see a slower weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Explaining the Fast Regain
Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the drugs is key to understanding the amplified rebound.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could lessen responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Disease?
Health authorities recommend the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts argue that, considering the high risk of relapse, the treatment is often life-long.
This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "highlight the chronic character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Accounts
Individuals who have stopped the medication report a sudden resurgence of appetite.
"It was like something that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," described a patient.
This challenge is worsened if individuals have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Significant Use
Figures indicate that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.
- Adoption is higher among females than males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss hinges on combined behavioural changes.
